Mr & Mrs Smith (2008) Opening Scene Analysis

Mr & Mrs Smith (2008)

Mr and Mrs Smith is represented as a new kind of opening scene to a movie. It includes Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as the main cast for the movie; these 2 actors have been known to have great chemistry in past films and appearances. Nicole Kidman was originally cast as Mrs Smith but dropped out, Johnny Depp was at one point to have been Mr Smith but his commitment to other film projects meant he also had to drop out.

The opening scene begins as a 2 shot, mid shot that include the 2 actors (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie) represented as Mr and Mrs Smith. The starting opening scene gives the impression that the movie is going to a be a romantic comedy due to the fact that they are a couple that should be together and probably will be in the conclusion of the movie.

The Characters look like a great symbol of successful Americans which represent the ‘American dream’. Even though they are in a marriage guidance council office, they look like they are a very great couple and should be together. The whole opening scene is shot with one camera angle that is the 2 shot, mid shot of the couple in the movie. They talk about their relationship in the scene and seem very professional and organised. The clothes are semi-formal and the couple are wearing similar clothes that give the sense they are equals and should be together. The setting is in an office that looks a bit expensive with office blinds and modern couches. As the couple are questioned we are given the knowledge that they are in a marriage guidance council office and this gives the time zone of the movie, which is Modern America.

As the opening sequence ends there is a glimpse cut of a military helicopter flying out which gives a totally new impression of the whole movie. The military helicopter gives a new take on the whole movie genre, it gives the movie a new sense that it is going to introduce action and violence into the movie, which is a new direction compared to the start with the marriage council.
